| Q:
Where are Western Hognose
Snakes From?
a: Western Hognose
Snakes are a North American
Snake Species. They are
quite common in the pet
trade and readily available
from most reptile stores.
Q:
How large do Western Hognose
Snakes Get?
a: Western Hognose
Snakes are a fairly small
snake species. Adults can
be expected to grow between
13 and 33 inches in length.
They are a fairly heavy
bodied snake for this size
and are about as thick as
most snakes 2 or 3 times
as long.
Q:
Are
they easy to keep in captivity?
a:
Western Hognose Snakes are
known to do very well in
captivity. They are a fairly
hardy species and will readily
take thawed mice and pinkies
as juveniles. A terrarium
roughly 3 feet long should
be more than large enough
for an adult snake.
Q:
What do Western Hognose
Snakes Eat?
a: Juvenile Western
Hognose Snakes can be fed
a small pinkie mouse about
once per week. Adult Hognose
Snakes will take a thawed
out adult mouse about once
every week or two. In general
try to keep the food source
no thicker in girth than
the widest part of the snakes
body.
Q:
What items will I need to purchase
to house a snake comfortably?
a: Before purchasing
a snake from a respected
snake shop we highly recommend
reading about the species
and learning if it will
be right for you. Our Western
Hognose Snake Care Guide
is the perfect start and
even includes handy plans
for building a custom professional
looking display enclosure
for your snake. Along with
this information the main
items you will need are:
Information, a suitably
sized enclosure, a water
dish, suitable substrate
for the enclosure, a hiding
area within the enclosure
(that your snake can completely
fit inside), a reptile light
source, under tank heater
(if necessary), a temperature
gauge, and feeding
hemostats. A month or so
of food is also recommended
to keep on hand.
